2014 was full of events for the members of the Hellenic Academy of Historical European Martial Arts ‘Leontes’. Let’s see a small review of these events.

The first Classical/Modern fencing & Historical European Martial Arts ‘workshop’ for kids was done at the English Center of Preschool training ‘Castle’ at Upper Korydalos in Greece.
At 26/3/2014, Mr. George Ε. Georgas did the first Classical/Modern fencing & Historical European Martial Arts ‘workshop’ for kids at the English Center of Preschool training ‘Castle’ at Upper Korydalos in Greece.
The students of the English Center of Preschool training was training for two hours, the basic footwork, the attacks and the defense of classical/modern fencing and of the Historical European Martial Arts ( H.E.M.A) .
At the end of the training the students were duel each other with training equipment for kids.

‘Byzantine swordsmanship’ workshop at the Association of Historical Studies ‘Koryvantes’
At February of 2014 Mr. George E. Georgas did ‘Byzantine swordsmanship’ workshop. The trainees study the guards with the use of xifos of type ‘spathion’.

At April 2014 Mr. George E. Georgas did Byzantine hoplomachia workshop. The trainees study the guards with the use of xifos of type ‘spathion’ and small round shield and also the basic attacks and defenses of them.


Classical Fencing workshop at the Veikou grove in Galatsi

At 9/5/2014 Mr. George E. Georgas did Classical fencing workshop to the Historical Martial Arts study group at the Veikou grove in Galatsi. The trainees, after a small lecture about the art of fencing from 19thcentury to our days, they study the basic footwork and guards of the epee and also the fundamental attack and the defense with parry and with distance.

At 10/5/2015 Mr.George E. Georgas did long sword workshop of the German school of fencing (Kunst des Fechtens ) to the Historical Martial Arts study group at the Veikou grove in Galatsi.
The trainees they watch a lecture about the history of this traditional combat art of the Holy Roman Germanic Empire from the fall of medieval times to the 17th century. After the lecture the trainees watch a presentation of Long sword duel and then they study the footwork, the guards, the fencing times of German school. Also they learned the fundamental strikes and the defenses of them following the teachings of Joachim Meyer.

At 28/6/2014 under the sponsorship of the Hellenic Federation of Pankration Athlima conducted Oplomachia workshop at the frames of Pammachon in Piraeus. At the workshop the trainees study the footwork with the use of any type of ‘white weapon’ irrelevant with the length or the form of the weapon.
The trainees had a broad analysis of distance control, movement and footwork.
Combat tactics versus one or more opponents but also combat tactics behind a shield wall or phalanx.
At the second part of the workshop the trainees had a broad analysis of the guards the attacks and the parries of military saber.
At the third part of the workshop the trainees study a shadow fighting with quarter staff as taught at the schools of Greece at the period of 1880-1908.
The instructor was Mr. Constantinos Dervenis, he is oplomachia (H.E.M.A) instructor and president of Pammachon sport branch of the Hellenic Federation of Pankration Athlima.

 

 

Exams of German school of Fencing, summer 2014
At July 2014 the Academy of Historical European Martial Arts did exams of German school of Fencing at the sports facilities of Piece and Friendship stadium of Piraeus. The exams did about the period 2013-2014.

 


‘Leontia 2014’ the first H.E.M.A fencing games in Piraeus
At July 2014 did with great success the first H.E.MA. Fencing games at the sports facilities of Piece and Friendship stadium of Piraeus. The fencing games concerned the long sword (Langes Schwer) and we follow the dueling rules of the Meyer Freifechter Guild. The rules reduced to the dueling rules from the Meyer’s years.
At the games participated athletes from the two fencing clubs of the Academy of Historical European Martial Arts, the A.G.C. ‘AXION’ Piraeus and the A.G.C ‘Eyzones’.
The first place received Mr. George E. Georgas, the second place received Mr. Odysseus Pasipoularidis and the third place received Mr. Constantine Kavvadias.
The H.E.M.A Fencing Games watched with great interest visitors from North Greece and from the islands of Saronic.

 


Presentation of Classical and Modern Fencing at the International School of Piraeus

At 6/10/2014 Mr. George E. Georgas did presentation of Classical and Modern Fencing at the International School of Piraeus with occasion of the Pan-Hellenic Day of School Sports.
The presentation watched all the students of the school. The students taught according to scientific data, from when the man uses the sword and the xifos, and how from martial art developed as touching sport. Also highlighted the differences and the similarities of the three fencing weapons, (the foil, the saber and the epee).

The students of the school watched a fencing lesson who did the coach wth his student George Baroutakis. George Baroutakis is foil athlete.
After the finish of the Fencing lesson, all the students of the school trained in fencing footwork, guards and simple attack.

At 7/10/2014 Mr. George E. Georgas did presentation of Classical and Modern Fencing at the Educational Organization ‘Themistocles’. The presentation watched the students of 6th class of the school. The students taught according to scientific data, from when the man uses the sword and the xifos, and how from martial art developed as touching sport. Also highlighted the differences and the similarities of the three fencing weapons, (the foil, the saber and the epee).
The students of the school watched a fencing lesson that did the coach with his student John Niforos. John Niforos is foil athlete.
After the finish of the Fencing lesson, all the students of the school trained in fencing footwork, guards and simple attack.

 


Presentation of Classical and Modern Fencing at the Educational Organization ‘Themistocles’
At the frames of Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports ‘I learn the sports’, the children of the kindergarten learned the basic footwork of fencing. Mr. George E. Georgas did the presentation and he presented the fencing to the kids as a fairytale.

 

The Hellenic Academy of Historical European Martial Arts ‘Leontes’, start a Hoplomachia study group in Thessalonica.
A new study group of Medieval & Renaissance swordsmanship begins the activities in Thessalonica.
The study group is under the sponsorship of the Academy of Historical European Martial Arts which is member of Meyer Freifechter Guild and Pammachon sport branch of the Hellenic Federation of Pankration Athlima.
The classes are the following:
1. German swordsmanship (Deutsche Fechtschule ) : Long sword, rapier.
2. Italian school of fencing : rapier
3. Byzantine oplomachia : sword of type spathion with small shield, sword of type paramirion with small shield, mace.

Members of the school participate at the Oplomachia workshop of Polish saber- Polish Szabla
At 29-30 November 2014, Mr. Jerzy Miklaszewski did open H.E.M.A. workshop of Polish Saber at the Olympic Center of Ano Liosia in Athens. The workshop developed under the sponsorship of the Hellenic Federation of Pankration Athlima (sports branch Pammachon).

Jerzy is:
Historical European Martial Arts instructor of the ‘Silkfencing Τeam’.
Official cooperator of the Polish Fencing Federation.
Member of Meyer’s Freufechter Guild.
Member of Pammachon sports branch the Hellenic Federation of Pankration Athlima.
Member of HEMA Alliance.
At the workshop participated active and other members of other organizations and martial arts federations.
The workshop start with a lecture about the development of saber in Europe. Highlighted the similarities with the Byzantine sword paramirion, which is a saber type weapon. Also highlighted the historical connection of Polish saber type of combat with the Pankration. He reported also that in the rennesance , the famous Romioi (Greeks) mercenaries with the name stratioti , they bring their style of combat at the North Europe, especially in Poland and the Holy Roman Germanic Empire, where this style merged with the local school of hoplomachia.

 

 

The Polish saber added to the teaching program of the Academy of Historical European Martial Arts ‘Leontes’
After the workshop of Polish saber where conducted with great success at the Olympic Center of Ano Liosia in Athens under the sponsorship of the Hellenic Federation of Pankration Athlima (sports branch Pammachon) with instructor Mr. Jerzy Miklaszewski, the Polish saber added to the teaching program of the school.

Epee study group begin the activities at the Educational Organization ‘Themistocles’

The Educational Organization ‘Themistocles’ for first time of the school history has fencing study group. The trainees of the group study epee. The instructor is Mr. George E. Georgas.

Historical Martial Arts Study Group start its activities in Galatsi (Athens)
The Historical Martial Arts Study Group start its activities under the sponsorship of the Hellenic Academy of Historical Euopean Martial Arts ‘Leontes’.
The study group is training German school of fencing with the method of Meyer’s Freifechter Guild. Also the group study Byzantine and Roman swordmanship.

A new study group of Medieval & Renaissance swordsmanship begins the activities in East Attica.
The study group is under the sponsorship of the Academy of Historical European Martial Arts which is member of Meyer Freifechter Guild and Pammachon sport branch of the Hellenic Federation of Pankration Athlima.

St.Mercurios, patron saint of our school

After the advice of the Archimandrite father Chisostomos of the Holy Church of St. John of Piraeus, the St. Mercusrios is the protector of the members of the Hellenic Academy of Historical European Martial Arts ‘Leontes’.
St.Mercurios was a Scythian in origin and he was in the service of the Imperial army of Rome at the reign of emperor Decius (245-251). St. Mercurios was a famous fencer, at his martyriologium referred how he confounded the barbarians who threats the bordersof the Roman empire. He slays in duel the king of the barbarians with the name Rigas but before him he had won with the help of an angel of our Lord, all the barbarian king’s guards. St. Mercurios executed from the imperials for his faith.
Another name of St. Mercurios is ‘He who brings two swords’.

St. Mercurios protector of the members of the Hellenic Academy of Historical European Martial Arts ‘Leontes’. The icon was made from Mr. Dimitrios Skourtelis, icon maker, historical researcher and member of the Hellenic Academy of Historical European Martial Arts ‘Leontes’

 
Military saber exams, Christmas 2014

It was made with great success the Military saber exams of the Hellenic Academy of Historical European Martial Arts ‘Leontes’ at the sports facilities of Piece and Friendship stadium of Piraeus. The exams did about the students’ progress of the French school of fencing with the use of military saber for the period of 2014.

 

Byzantine swordsmanship exams, Christmas 2014

It was made with great success the Byzantine swordsmanship exams of the Hellenic Academy of Historical European Martial Arts ‘Leontes’ at the sports facilities of Piece and Friendship stadium of Piraeus. The exams did about the students’ progress of the Byzantine swordsmanship with the use of xifos of type spathion for the period of 2014.

At December 2014 the Hellenic Academy of Historical European Martial Arts ‘Leontes’ did exams of German school of Fencing at the sports facilities of Piece and Friendship stadium of Piraeus. The exams did about the students’ progress for the period 2014.

The Hellenic Academy of Historical European Martial Arts ‘Leontes’, at the sponsors of the ‘The Lord of the Rings Athens Day 2014’. The school was given subscription gifts to the winners of lottery to participate for a one month free lessons in Medieval and Renaissance hoplomachia and Classical and Modern Fencing.

George GeorgasMr. George E. Georgas is the founder of the Hellenic Academy of Historical European Martial Arts ‘Leontes’. He is certificated fencing instructor of the Hellenic Fencing Federation and also national referee of the Hellenic Fencing Federation at the epee. He is instructor of Meyer Freifechter Guild with the rank of Fecther and he is the Unterhauptman of the Guild in Greece. He is also member of Learn Sword Fight (Gladiatores). He is in the Administration Council of the ‘Pammachon’ (which is the name of the Hellenic HEMA Federanion in Greece). He is also instructor of weapon fighting of the Association of Historical studies ‘KORYVANTES’. He is studying the ancient Greek and Byzantine warfare, such as the use of rompaia, spathion and paramirion types of swords and other weapons such as the spear.
